Beyond the Margins: An LGBT Refugee Experience

In recognition of the challenges faced by LGBT refugees and asylum seekers, the City of Houston Office of New Americans, ACLU of Texas, The Alliance, Human Rights First, Refugee Council USA, and YMCA International Services, are hosting a symposium at Resurrection Metropolitan Community Church. 

Come see a series of video shorts featuring refugees, asylees, and LGBT activists from across the globe, followed by a panel discussion featuring immigration experts and members of the Houston LGBT community who have fled persecution abroad.

SPEAKERS INCLUDE:
(Moderator) Melanie Toarmina Pang: Melanie is a social worker and founding co-chair of Mayor Turner’s LGBTQ Advisory Council. She currently serves as the Manager of Emergency Disaster Services for The Salvation Army of Greater Houston.

Laura Nally, Human Rights First. Laura serves as Managing Attorney and oversees the pro bono legal representation of indigent asylum seekers by providing support, mentoring, and training to volunteer lawyers in Houston

Christian Longue Dessug, Alliance for Multicultural Community Services. Christian is originally from Cameroon and has served as an advocate for the LGBT community abroad and in the United States.

Mary N., is originally from Iran and came to the United States as a refugee. She is a member of Resurrection MCC.  

Franklin Lucien Tatpa, is originally from Cameroon and received asylum in the United States. He now works for a nonprofit organization in Houston.

Adonnay Antonio Aguilar Marmol, is originally from El Salvador and received asylum in the United States. He is currently working, going to school, and hopes to one day help others who seek a better life.
