What refugees can offer businesses
Many refugees are highly educated and may have been professionals or small business owners in their home countries. They bring a wealth of skills, work experience, ideas, and most importantly a strong drive to regain self-sufficiency and financial stability for their families.
Refugee clients that resettle in the United States typically arrive with no economic security and must initially rely on limited financial assistance. It is imperative that they achieve self-sufficiency as quickly as possible through employment.
Why businesses should hire refugees
Your business may be eligible to receive the Work Opportunity Tax Credit through employing refugees. The Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) is a Federal tax credit available to employers for hiring individuals from certain target groups that have consistently faced significant barriers to employment. The maximum tax credit ranges from $1,200 to $9,600 depending on the employee hired.
Businesses benefit greatly from the skills, experience, and work ethic of refugees. Hiring refugees has the additional benefit of bringing cultural diversity and increasing a business’ engagement in the local community.
Refugees are fully authorized to work
We are often asked about this issue by potential employers. Immediately upon entry to the United States with their I-94 issued by U.S. Customs and Immigration Services, refugees are fully authorized to work. They also have clear criminal backgrounds and typically receive Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) and Social Security Cards within a month of arrival.
