This holiday season, Refugee Services of Texas aims to highlight and share the stories of some of our amazing volunteers and clients. Sarah Bisnette, a volunteer at Refugee Services of Texas of Fort Worth, shares her experience in an English as a Second Language (ESL) classroom.
The RST staff are committed to the success of their clients. They strive toward helping refugees adapt to American culture and transition into their new homes. Teaching English is just one of the many opportunities that they provide their clients. When I began working with RST, I had no idea the profound impact it would have on my life.
I reached out to RST with the desire to gain experience as an ESL instructor. They allowed me to participate in a class led by Charlene Daniels where I assisted teaching a class of 14 diverse students. Charlene had a commitment to the student’s success that was admirable. She taught me what was necessary to be a good teacher and welcomed me from the beginning, allowing me to be fully involved in the teaching process.
Working with refugees has been an incredibly rewarding experience. From day one, I developed a bond between the students that inspired me to become the best teacher I could be. They have proven to be some of the most uplifting, kind, and resilient individuals I have met. They have a determination that is inspiring for any teacher or volunteer. I will never forget the refugees that I met or the feeling that I had while teaching. The opportunity that RST rewarded me has proven to be immeasurable.
This experience has provided me with the confidence and skills required to be a successful teacher. I am grateful that I got to be a part of that process and know the positive impact that I made on 14 incredible individuals.
This Holiday Season you can show refugees that you welcome them by sharing their story and supporting our essential services. Visit our website at www.rstx.org/donate to learn more about how you can help and don't forget to donate this Giving Tuesday!
